Reading have completed the signing of midfielder Kalifa Cisse from Boavista.
The 22-year-old Frenchman, who has spent the last two seasons with the Portuguese side, becomes Steve Coppell's first signing of the summer.
Royals director of football Nicky Hammond said of the £1m signing: "Kalifa is a 6ft 2in central midfielder who has also played in defence.
"He has real athletic ability and the technical attributes that should be well-suited to the Premiership."
Neil Warnock has become the latest Premiership manager to depart from his club after agreeing to leave Sheffield United.
Following the club's relegation on the final day of the season, Warnock confessed his desire to manage for a further two years in the Premiership.
United had previously offered Warnock a two-year deal to remain at Bramall Lane but the self-confessed Blades supporter failed to concur on fresh terms.
Warnock becomes the third manager to leave a Premiership club since the close of the season, following closely on the heels of Stuart Pearce and Paul Jewell.
Sheffield United will be holding a ress conference at 11am this morning.
Fifa president Sepp Blatter says he will look into how the Premier League handled West Ham's breach of rules.
West Ham were fined £5.5m for irregularities over the signing of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano but they escaped a points deduction.
Blatter said he is "monitoring the situation very carefully".
But Fifa has told BBC Five Live Sport that it is not re-examining the evidence with the aim of testing the Premier League's ruling.
West Ham broke two Premier League rules by entering into a private agreement with a third-party company when they signed Argentine pair Tevez and Mascherano in August last year.
Mascherano has since moved to Liverpool, while Tevez stayed in London and played an influential role in West Ham's successful battle against relegation - scoring seven goals in the club's last 10 games.
Sheffield United, who went down on the final day of the season, are leading the fight against an independent commission's decision not to punish the Hammers with a points deduction.
The Blades, who are being supported by the likes of Wigan, Fulham, Charlton and Middlesbrough, are also concerned that West Ham may still have been breaking Premier League rules after the ruling on 27 April.
The Premier League has argued that it has no case to answer in regards to West Ham's punishment because all 20 Premiership clubs agreed to the disciplinary system in place.
However, that has not stopped Sheffield United pursuing their case and Blatter's intervention may encourage them.
A Premier League statement later read: "We have implemented our rulebook and processes to the letter in this matter and we are more than happy to give Fifa any assurances or explanations they need."
Sheffield United have called a news conference for Wednesday morning amid speculation Neil Warnock could quit.
Manager Warnock, 58, is unhappy with the new deal he was offered, which is far less after Premiership relegation.
He was set to be handed a reported £750,000 contract if he had kept the Blades up as opposed to the £450,000 now tabled after the defeat to Wigan.
His assistant Stuart McCall has said: "It wouldn't surprise me if that was the gaffer's last game in charge."
The Blades were relegated from the Premiership after losing 2-1 to Wigan, a result which saw the Latics leapfrog their opponents and avoid the drop with a goal difference just one better than their rivals.
And Warnock met with club officials on Tuesday, having indicated after that crunch defeat that he would take a number of days to consider his future after seven-and-a-half years at Bramall Lane.
McCall added: "From a personal point of view, I thought that if we did get relegated then it would be Neil's last season at Sheffield because of what he has achieved."
However, the news conference could yet prove to be a red herring.
Sheffield United could comment on a possible legal challenge against the Premier League in the ongoing Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez transfer saga.
